Nordic Games Seizing Assets from THQ

In the aftermath of THQ’s bankrupcy – a event which we have yet to cover here – it seems as though hope remains for some of their properties, after all.  For a lucky few franchises, Nordic Games will serve as a home, given that they were one of several successful bidders in the auctioning of THQ’s assets.

Nordic Games, the umbrella company that has overseen the publishing of critical successes like Alan Wake and Torchlight, announced today that it will be officially acquiring over 150 SKUs (stock-keeping units) for a total of $4.9 million USD.  This includes the publishing and development rights to various video game series, the highlights of which include Darksiders, Red Faction, Stuntman, Supreme Commander, and Destroy All Humans.  It also means that Nordic Games has the capability to distribute their games across PC, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony platforms.

Nordic Games certainly appears enthusiastic, as their CEO and owner Lars Wingefors has commented how the deal ” also turns over a new leaf for the entire Nordic Games Group.”  Plans to expand on the newly-acquired franchises are already on the horizon, says Wingefors, as he points out how “we either want to cooperate with the original creators or best possible developers in order to work on sequels or additional content for these titles.”  Finally, Lars notes how cautious Nordic is about approaching this responsibility, making it clear that “[a]  very important point for us is not to dash into several self-financed multi-million dollar projects right away, but rather to continue our in-depth analysis of all titles and carefully selecting different financing models for developing new instalments of acquired IPs.”

This deal stands as the most substantial in Nordic Games’ history, which is impressive considering they already obtained JoWooD Entertainment and its five subsidiaries back in 2011.   The sign-off on the deal by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court is expected on May 13, 2013, when all transactions related to THQ will be finalized.  At any rate, expect more updates on post-THQ properties as their new owners move forward.
